Africa' s PV Sector Rises as a Global Clean Energy Growth Hub
Drawing on years of industry expertise and cross-border data verification, the Africa Solar Outlook 2026 by the African Solar Energy Association clearly charts Africa' s rapid solar ascent. Once a laggard in traditional energy, Africa has now become a core growth engine of the global PV industry.
Global PV additions hit a record 618 GW in 2025, driving cumulative capacity sharply higher. That same year, renewables surpassed coal in electricity generation for the first time—a major shift in the global energy mix, with PV as the main driver of the transition. Amid worldwide PV expansion, Africa' s solar potential has been redefined. Earlier industry statistics recorded only 23.4 GW of operational capacity, but calibration with China' s PV export data reveals actual installed capacity of 63.9 GW—a 2.75‑fold underestimate. Africa posted the world' s fastest PV growth in 2025, and its five‑year compound annual growth rate leads most regions. Industrial, commercial and residential distributed PV are the hidden growth engines.
Sustained cost reductions and technological upgrades in energy storage are key to enabling PV deployment in Africa. As storage system costs fall year by year, daytime intermittent solar power can be turned into dispatchable power around the clock. The levelized cost of solar‑storage hybrid systems is far below that of diesel or conventional gas. Tailored to Africa' s weak grids and unstable supply, the solar‑plus‑storage model is widely deployed in large plants, industrial and mining sites, remote microgrids, and beyond. Benchmark projects in Congo, Mauritius and other countries have made solar‑storage an essential form of basic power supply across Africa.
PV development across African nations shows a tiered pattern. Namibia, South Africa and others lead the continent in per capita PV capacity, and over 30 countries have solar power exceeding 10% of their generation. Regional electrification levels differ sharply: North Africa and island nations have universal access, while Sub‑Saharan Africa still faces a large power gap, leaving vast room for PV in grassroots markets. Meanwhile, tariffs and VAT on PV equipment vary widely. Tax exemptions and low rates strongly support industry deployment, fostering a diversified landscape where utility‑scale plants, distributed PV, and off‑grid systems advance side by side.
Africa' s PV industry is now shifting from deployment to local manufacturing. Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia and others are accelerating production lines for PV modules and cells, gradually reducing reliance on imports, improving local supply chains, and creating industrial jobs. PV is also expanding into mining, industrial/commercial cost reduction, electric mobility in Kenya, rural electrification in Zambia, and more—becoming a key driver of Africa' s economic and social development.
Nevertheless, Africa' s solar sector still faces challenges: lagging grid infrastructure, insufficient long‑term financing, and an immature local industrial chain. As large‑scale PV plants are built and solar‑storage microgrids are increasingly connected, stable power system operation requires better supporting facilities. High‑quality excitation equipment and other power auxiliary devices will lay a solid foundation for PV grid integration and consumption and for stable grid operation. Once these gaps are filled, Africa' s solar potential will be further unleashed.
