Chinese Investment in Kazakhstan' s Coal Chemical Projects Spurs Concurrent Demand for Electrical Equipment
The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan stated this week that Kazakh authorities have held discussions with Chinese investors regarding investments in coal chemical projects, as the Central Asian nation continues to advance in-depth development of its coal sector. During the Tuesday meeting, both sides focused on the progress of ongoing coal chemical projects in Kazakhstan, and the Chinese side expressed willingness to deepen participation and cooperation.
Potential Chinese entry will further diversify foreign capital sources for Kazakhstan' s coal industry, which has previously attracted investments from Russia, Germany, the United States and other countries. Last month, Kazakhstan clarified its plan to advance six coal-to-chemical projects between 2026 and 2031, focusing on the production of metallurgical coke and synthetic fuels. The initiative aims to extend the coal industrial chain and raise added value.
Coal chemical projects generate substantial supporting demand for electrical equipment. Given that such projects involve high-temperature and high-pressure reactions, continuous operation, as well as flammable and explosive environments, extremely stringent requirements are imposed on power supply reliability, equipment safety and control precision. A large number of critical power equipment including pumps, fans and compressors within projects require variable frequency speed regulation, soft start and synchronous control. Supporting electrical systems generally cover the following categories: power transformation and distribution equipment such as power transformers and high/low-voltage switchgear for power reception and distribution; motor control and drive equipment including frequency converters, high-voltage solid-state soft starter cabinets and excitation cabinets for the start-up, speed regulation and excitation adjustment of high-power motors; and special process control equipment such as high-voltage control power supplies and power & voltage regulation devices for specific loads including electrostatic tar precipitators and heating systems. All equipment must comply with safety specifications such as explosion protection and ingress protection to adapt to the harsh operating conditions at coal chemical sites.
In terms of power infrastructure, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan indicated that with new power generation capacity coming online this year, the national power surplus is expected to reach 1.3 terawatt-hours by the end of 2027. The ministry plans to commission at least 2.42 gigawatts of installed capacity this year as part of a broader national power development plan. Under this plan, a total of 7.8 gigawatts of new installed capacity will be added by 2030, dominated by coal-fired power generation, with a total investment of approximately 7.5 trillion tenge (equivalent to 15.5 billion US dollars).
Kazakhstan' s current power mix is heavily reliant on coal. Data from the Ministry of Energy shows coal-fired power accounts for roughly 62% of power generation this year, followed by natural gas-fired power at 23.4%, hydropower at 7.5% and renewable energy at 7%. Going forward, as coal chemical projects are implemented and the national power surplus expands, the electrification and automation level of the country' s coal industrial chain is expected to improve further, creating potential market opportunities for suppliers of relevant electrical equipment.
